Technology, Clouds, Social Security and Job Services

… was able to successfully use these techniques to land into a number of reputable Microsoft Partners …

From the same guy that brought you

“SharePoint for the Newstart”!

Globalisation

  • Australia is still quintessentially the place where it is difficult to find SKILLED labour
  • It is never been more the case … the SKILL level is higher … but the rewards are even HIGHER!! ;)
  • So we continue to Tune and Optimise the Safety Net for the 21st Century
  • Ever widening gap between those that have SKILLS and those that have not!
  • Does this mean Australia has to sacrifice our decent welfare system*? Not at all! ?
  • Use of the public, private and community clouds – including telephone and internet to help job seekers help themselves by giving them the right information
  • Safety Net may have to somewhat assist to give retrenched and unemployed workers new skills

The Cloud and Job Search

  • The Public Cloud is Telephone and Internet
  • Replaces inefficient physical door knocking with virtual door knocking

Key Technologies in Job Searching

  • Word Processing
    • Word
  • Social Media
    • LinkedIn
  • Web Browser
    • Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera
  • Internet Phone
    • Skype, Hangouts
  • Telephone
    • Mobile
  • Job Boards
    • Seek, Gumtree
  • Search Engines
    • Google
  • BYOD Devices connect to WiFi
  • Spreadsheets (Journal Job Seeking Efforts)
    • Excel

The Job Find Centre of the future.

  • Facebook Messaging – apply penalties for Centrelink
  • IP Telephony provides free phone calls (local and STD) to landlines
  • Only landlines (not mobile or international landlines)

  • Not for Profit SPLA licenses on Employment Provider terminals
  • A [significant] role to play as does the technology industry
  • Margins may be low but volume of Australian jobseekers is significant!

Certificates for Higher Streams

  • As Job Seekers upstream Certificates in Business
  • This does not hurt but it is better to … provide Certificates in ICT as Computer Technology
  • Technology not just assists Jobseekers actually allows exerting control on Job Seekers to look for work!
  • Aim for more sincere Job Seeker efforts and looking around more for work

ICT Training

  • BYOD Devices
  • Microsoft Office
  • Internet Technologies, Web Browsers etc …

Conclusion

  • Technology facilities business, therefore Technology facilities jobs!

This is not to mention the renewed importance in finding a job ~ in the 21st Century!

Ambiguous Words in SharePoint - ~ SharePoint Study Guide

Very ambiguous, frequently occurring and quite the cause of confusion - use this to help you study SharePoint.

Try and get the exact context when these words are being used - if you're talking to a customer.

  • Web
  • Application
  • Site
  • Content

Still ambiguous but no so frequently occurring:

  • Policy
  • Template
  • Service
  • Feature

If your business are throwing these words around make sure you clarify with them what they are meaning

  • Information Management
  • Content Management
  • Collaboration
  • Work space

xRM Job Search Diary

This is still a work in progress ... it will only be complete once I finalise a design on an xRM demo tenant ... contact me if you are interested in expediting this.

Existing System – ‘The Dole Diary’

  • Started by John Howard
  • Current system 10 Employer Contacts (or 10 Activities in xRM terms – that is phone calls, e-mails or appointments)
  • Needs to go through Australian Parliament
  • And then - train JSAs, DEWR in xRM!
  • First step could be to start getting Job Seekers (also Job Service Providers) in a mind set shift from Activities to Opportunities or at least Leads
    • This would be a measurable impact on the Australian economy!
    • Lower the unemployment rate.
    • Increase workforce participation etc ….

10 “Opportunities” per fortnight!

  • Stakeholders will ask “What is an Opportunity?”
  • Increase **Quality** of contacting employers and subsequent jobsearching…
  • 10 Opportunities per fortnight!
  • 10 qualified (warm) Opportunities per fortnight – not just Leads or xRM Activities (Phone Calls and E-mails)!
  • To get 10 proper Opportunities takes job-seeking effort!

xRM Strategy – 2 [Main] Goals

  • Monitor Sales (or Job Seeking) Efforts
  • Help somebody get off Benefits and into a Job!

xRM Jobsearch Diary

  • An xRM [Online] Solution for the Jobsearch Diary
  • CRM monitors (and assists with) Sales efforts
  • Assist those looking for genuine work
  • xRM Solution to assist those looking for work

Opportunities are the main if only 'whole Entity'

  • Opportunity is Central Entity
  • Description field
  • Able to add Notes
  • Job Seekers are almost always looking for Immediate Start so Estimated Close Date is almost irrelevant … etc …

See below for link to Schema.

Some points on Managed Payroll particularly in Government

  • Commonwealth Government is probably the largest entity in Australia and needs to give rise to 3 different types of payroll – APS payroll, Managed Payroll and Recruiter Payroll (perhaps under Managed Payroll)
  • Of course this excludes Subcontractors working on a Results basis whom manage their own Public Liability
  • You will also be able to manage transitions across all 3 e.g. from Managed Payroll to APS payroll and back again etc …
  • Payroll in the 21st century to be quite sophisticated to meet the needs of pseudo APS staff - using FBT claims to allow for partial deductions on smartphones, conferences, wearables, Internet etc … as these are necessary tools in contract - APS that taxpayer does not provide!
  • Electronic timesheet systems also need to be quite flexible and keep good records of 0.5 days worked – not just weeks, fortnights or months
  • A key goal here is for recruiters to make more placements and they should be definitely encouraged to make more placements!

More Aboriginal / Indigenous names for Australian streets & suburbs ...

At the moment I am thinking of streets as an obvious example.

Too many George Street, Elizabeth Street, Queen Street etc ... especially that some of them are on obscure small streets!

A relatively inexpensive gesture of reconciliation I would have thought?

Universities Scenario: If Canberra was shifted to Melbourne!

Universities Scenario

  • Allow a University in Sydney and a University in Melbourne to merge and have two campuses to better position itself to export into Asian Markets
  • Imagine if the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne agreed to offer the same courses and recognise each other’s Degrees - so you would only need to choose which Campus you wanted to study at and which city you wanted to live in! Or shift in between!
  • No more of these small intra-city campuses - only middle sized campuses in 2 different cities!
  • A Chinese student looking to study overseas would only have to choose between Melbourne & Sydney – mouth watering, irresistible!

Nuclear Australian Navy

  • Nuclear Aircraft Carriers for Border Control
  • A Very large landmass, Maritime Area and Antarctic territory means we need:
  • Nuclear Submarines which can stay under water indefinitely rather than Diesel Submarines and can therefore move much faster underwater
  • They are also silent
  • Such vessels certainly would have a strong role to play in stability in the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and make the World at large a lot safer!
  • Not encumbered with storing large quantities of fuel would give them a great deal of flexibility as well
  • They would be extremely useful in humanitarian operations as well (such as Fukushima)

Left of the Long Tail

Now I know everyone has heard the hype about this but I may reinforce this that there are probably more examples than not that the:
Head (or Hump) of the Long Tail is subject to the Law of Diminishing Returns!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_tail
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminishing_returns

Increasingly gives greater weight to the idea that in the Connected World business we should focus on increasing the volume of Customers!

Feel free to Comment with all of your interesting examples!

Dual-Services for Australian Defence ~ A new spin on Combined Arms for the ADF

Time for more Cross – Service, Dual-Services units for the ADF!

Branch
Branch
Airborne (Paratroopers)
Air Force
Army
Marines
Army
Navy
Jets deployed on Air Craft Carriers
Navy
Air Force

*Helicopter Units in the Army would probably stay in the Army however units would be better positioned to cross over into these Dual-Services units

Nuclear Australia

No point being naïve – Australia needs to go nuclear at some stage

The deserts of Australia are also insulated from natural disasters, earthquakes, cyclones etc ... hence Nuclear Power plants selling power back to the grid to the Eastern states would have very little risk of radioactive fallout.

Which means exporting more LNG and clean coal to Asia!

If Canberra was shifted to Melbourne .. [Scenarios]

And we subsequently had a high speed rail connection between Sydney & Melbourne ...

  • With a choice of living in Sydney or Melbourne the Federal Government can now attract and retain the best talent be it APS, SES, (employee) contractors or subcontractors!
  • Live in Sydney work in Melbourne via high speed rail & Internet & vice versa
  • An SES Executive working & living in either Sydney or Melbourne could have weekend getaways to:
  • Broome to buy Pearls, to Kakadu, to a Wine Region, to the Barrier Reef – to Ayers Rock etc …
  • You can live on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Newcastle, Wollongong, Darwin  – work in Melbourne or Sydney
  • Or live anywhere in Australia for that matter and Fly In Fly Out to Sydney or Melbourne!
  • More flights to the conjoined Sydney & Melbourne will result in cheaper and more flights within and out of Australia!
  • How about a combined Canberra – Melbourne Coffee Culture!

The Canberra Problem!

They should have left the Federation Capital in Melbourne – Merge Canberra with Melbourne!

  1. Lack of natural light
  2. No natural insulation – beaches, mountains etc …
  3. Inhospitable weather (& extreme weather) – shocking weather
  4. Frost, fog, hail, dryness – conditions not present in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin etc … burning sun
  5. Therefore not energy efficient!
  6. A compromise solution by Politicians not City Planners!
  7. Analogous to using the correct Data Structure in Computer Science
  8. Breathe flies
  9. Also not enough ‘natural’ water
  10. The trip from Melbourne to Albury is the most boring in Australia – trees, shrubs, grass, hills and rocks
  11. 7 degrees to 45 degrees – 50 degree temperature range
  12. A surreal environment

Sydney and Melbourne would then be …

  • Connected by a high speed rail link (including freight)
  • Connected by toll road (all the way – along the Coast – between $20 - $100 to travel the whole way)
  • Connected by high speed Internet
  • Many more flights between Sydney & Melbourne
  • Etc …

Preference Development along Coastal High Speed Rail Link

  • Population Growth will preference along the coast (around Sydney & Melbourne)
  • That is preference development in Central Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong etc .. over Goulburn etc …

Comparative Advantages of Sydney v Melbourne

  • Sydney (being the landing spot of the First Fleet) should also be the: Transportation, Port, Logistics etc …
  • Sydney is the Financial Capital, Media Capital
  • Melbourne is the Administrative Capital
  • Sydney – Melbourne duopoly runs Australia
  • Government Agencies could be divided between Sydney and Melbourne
  • e.g. Fair Work Ombudsman (Department of Employment) spans both Administration & Business

Remember the reason anyone ever goes to or lives in Canberra …

A few real life examples of Bus Factor and Key Person Risk

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_factor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_person_insurance

Usually real life examples include some sort of personal drama
e.g relationship break-ups, getting kicked out of their house and not having anywhere to live etc ...

I'm sure we all have plenty of examples!

Isn't Wikipedia fantastic having all these sorts of articles ...

Australia is a great country for starting a business ...

Well certain sorts of businesses anyway ... e.g. Agriculture, Aquaculture ...

Capital Raising is very simple and the generate what every business needs Immediate Cash Flow!

In other countries, especially Developing ones you need to deal with micro-financing, crowd-sourcing, stock options etc ...

[Microsoft] Training for Productivity Products.

  • Seems like nearly all Partners & Customers are deficit in this as the;
  • 'Environment is Everything' & 'Seeing is Believing‘!
  • An eventual aim is to Use Lab Environments (refer to Cisco) for exams in addition to or in place of multiple choice questions - with Internet access!
    • A more sophisticated kind of exam
  • Partners & Customers to implementing a Training Bond almost a necessity due to the relatively high cost of the training!

You don't need fancy Dynamics AX licensing to get started!

You can do just fine selling SharePoint, Skype for Business & Project Server!

And Dynamics CRM of course.

More important to know what the functionality is of Dynamics NAV, Dynamics GP, Dynamics SL and Dynamics AX I think!

Plotting Demand Supply Curves for Secondary Goods (Manufactured Goods) !!

It is more representative to use the:

x-axis as the Price !
y-axis as the Quantity Demanded!

Traditional Demand Supply Curves are for Primary Goods (Commodities): e.g. Rice, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), ...

These are Price Makers!

In the Secondary Sector you are a Price Taker!

Power BI is great against other Public Cloud Data Sources!

Very cost-effective!
Feel free to comment here as you find them!

The Business Connectivity Services would also have the same business case against Public Cloud data if you can create Connection Files to Online Sources!

Just like the Dynamics CRM and SharePoint Document Management integration on the Online!

Against Deep Internet - a possibility although I haven't test against mapping credentials.

On-Premise which is where most data typically is - not so sure! Maybe time for SharePoint On-Premise.

Power BI is the PaaS of SharePoint BI.

If you think Globalisation is challenging!

Just to underscore the importance of Trade & Business Intercultural relationships are now widely encouraged by Society! Certainly they are hard work!

Hopefully turns out like;
https://fee.org/articles/the-double-thank-you-of-the-market/

Wasn't that long ago that people thought they should just stick with people in their own country ...

So you can see the benefits - hence we have to keep punching along!

  • Western people in Chinese cities - bits of English being spoken, English signs here and there
  • Women & girls from Western countries being able to visit the Middle East - albeit wearing different clothes
  • Chinese people or people from Islamic countries migrating to Western countries to live
  • etc ...

White Australia Policy for Satya to ponder!

Yes they definitely got it right with:

  • Greek Immigrants
  • Yugoslavian Immigrants
  • Netherlands Immigrants
  • etc ...

At least they didn't bring in ** GROAN ** more British people!! :(

But I guess to Satya I would say perhaps Australia then should have let in more people from Commonwealth countries in Africa and Asia whom they had fought together with against the Japanese?

This is especially so given the situation with migration in the UK now?

A case of what could have been but never was ...

The Content Query Web Part is great!

If only Microsoft could create everything like this!

Metacode!

Just like Microsoft Office.

I would single out in particular;
  • Enterprise Blogging
  • Enterprise Wikis
in SharePoint! Not as good!

This idea talks about the importance of tools - although I would interpret this to mean not just for developers (e.g. Visual Studio) but also power users - and users!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mythical_Man-Month#Specialized_tools

So I think Microsoft should stick to designing the Core!

A few more ideas for Beauty and the Geek Penultimate Challenge Settings

Unlikely if this show will ever make a come-back but 2020 has given this post new impetus, even if the show might not come back! I am perso...
